CSOs Demand Probe Into Alleged Tear-Gassing of Lagos Pensioners, Payment of Arrears
A coalition of civil society organisations has called for an independent investigation into the alleged tear-gassing of pensioners protesting unpaid benefits at the Lagos State House of Assembly on August 31, 2026. The group said the pensioners, including retirees under the Defined Benefit and Contributory Pension Schemes, were peacefully demanding outstanding pension increases, wage awards and arrears. It alleged that police fired tear gas at the elderly protesters, an account the Lagos State Police Command has reportedly denied. The CSOs urged the Police Service Commission and the Inspector-General of Police to investigate the incident, retrain officers on protest rights and sanction anyone found to have used unlawful force. They also asked the Lagos State Government to pay undisputed arrears immediately and publish a time-bound plan for settling all outstanding pension obligations.
