Health Crisis Delays Arraignment of ‘Mmụọ Mmiri A Fụrụ Anya’ at Anambra High Court
The Anambra State High Court in Awka adjourned the arraignment of native doctor Ikechukwu Ezenagu, known as “Mmụọ Mmiri A Fụrụ Anya,” after he was brought from his sickbed in a visibly frail condition. Justice Jude Obiora ruled that proceeding under such circumstances would violate fair hearing principles. Ezenagu’s case follows his high-profile arrest in Nnewi under the state’s homeland security framework. He was taken into custody alongside other practitioners and accused of unregulated ritual activities. Reports later emerged that he fell seriously ill in detention, excreting blood and requiring urgent medical transfer to a teaching hospital. On the scheduled arraignment date, the defence and prosecution clashed over whether to proceed. The judge sided with the defence, adjourning the case to June 3, 2026, to allow for his recovery. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a fair and thorough trial under the relevant state laws.
