Reimagining Nigeria: How True Federalism Could Transform Our States

I grew up hearing loud debates about restructuring, but our system is a unitary government in federal clothing. One police command fights banditry in Sokoto and cult clashes in Rivers with the same tool. True federalism means states policing their own streets and keeping a fair share of their wealth. Regions would legislate local needs—agriculture, trade, education—while the centre handles defence, foreign policy, and currency. This model would spark healthy competition among strong regional economies. Accountability would move closer to the people when their leaders manage the resources they generate. I believe genuine federalism can transform our security, economy, and governance. What do you think it would fix first in your state? Join the conversation below.
