Nigeria’s High Commissioner-Designate to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode, has condemned an alleged police assault that reportedly led to the death of Chika Ibe, a Nigerian from Abia State, in Bellville, Cape Town. A video circulating online reportedly shows South African police officers restraining Ibe at his home. Witnesses allege that he was suffocated during the incident. South African police have denied wrongdoing, while Ibe later died. Fani-Kayode said Nigeria would no longer remain silent over attacks, alleged extrajudicial killings and racial stereotyping of Nigerians in South Africa. He called for accountability and said stronger action is needed to protect Nigerian nationals.
