Lagos Flood Plan: Hamzat Proposes Drainage Reviews, Dredging and Stricter Enforcement
Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat says the state is reviewing its flood-control strategy as changing rainfall patterns put greater pressure on drainage systems and waterways. The measures under consideration include more frequent reviews of the drainage master plan, regular clearing of drains by Environmental Flooding Action Group workers, dredging of the Ikota River and stricter action against buildings approved on flood-prone land. The state is also considering digital mapping and drainage sensors to improve monitoring. Hamzat urged residents to stop dumping refuse in drains, noting that blocked channels worsen local flooding. He said the success of the plan will depend on consistent maintenance, enforcement of planning rules and clear evidence that flood risks are reducing in affected communities.
