ICC Convicts Former CAR Rebel Commander Mahamat Said Abdel Kani of War Crimes

The International Criminal Court has convicted former Central African Republic rebel commander Mahamat Said Abdel Kani of war crimes and crimes against humanity for torture and mistreatment of detainees during the country’s 2013 civil conflict. Judges found that Said, who led a unit at a Bangui detention centre, took part in interrogations and was present during the abuse of prisoners. Detainees were reportedly beaten, held in degrading conditions and subjected to severe physical mistreatment. The court will announce his sentence later. Said was acquitted of three other war-crimes charges. The case is part of wider ICC prosecutions linked to the Central African Republic conflict, which killed thousands and displaced many more.
