UK-Based Nigerian Developer’s Lagos Life Game Tops 2 Million Players in Its First Week
Lagos Life, a browser-based multiplayer game created by Nigerian developer Shalom Mathew, has drawn more than two million registered players within its first week, according to figures displayed on the game’s dashboard. The virtual world lets players work, earn naira, pay rent, buy property, socialise and navigate a fictionalised version of life in Lagos. The game requires no app-store download and can be played through a phone or computer browser. Its Nigerian setting, featuring local jobs, transport, food, nightlife and the everyday pressure of meeting rent, appears to have driven its rapid online popularity. The platform has already added Abuja and Port Harcourt, while also testing advertising placements for real businesses. Its early growth has brought technical pressure, including a brief outage and reported attempts to exploit the in-game economy, but the creator says the game is fictional entertainment rather than a literal simulation of Nigeria.
