Cynthia Erivo Defends Her Close Friendship With Ariana Grande

Cynthia Erivo has criticised online commenters who questioned her close friendship with Ariana Grande during the promotion of Wicked and Wicked: For Good. Speaking to a British newspaper, Erivo said people had made unnecessary assumptions about their emotional interviews, where the pair were seen laughing, crying and holding hands. She questioned why open affection between two women made some observers uncomfortable. Erivo also addressed the moment she stepped in after a man approached and grabbed Grande at the Singapore premiere of Wicked: For Good in November 2025. She said she acted as a concerned friend, not as Grande’s “bodyguard.” The actresses became close while filming the two-part Wicked adaptation, with Erivo playing Elphaba and Grande portraying Glinda.
