YPP Withdraws From Anambra East LG Polls Over Alleged Security Disruption
Tension was reported in Otuocha, headquarters of Anambra East LGA, after operatives of the state security outfit, Operation Udo Ga-Achi, allegedly took over the venue for distributing materials for the council election. Witnesses said dozens of buses conveyed operatives to the council secretariat early on Saturday. Gunshots were reportedly heard within the premises, causing party agents and supporters to leave. The Young Progressives Party (YPP) withdrew from the election, alleging that its agents were denied access to election materials and that materials were released for only four of the LGA's 15 wards. The party also accused the electoral commission of favouring APGA, which denied it a fair process. Election and security authorities had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of the report. Reports from other parts of Anambra also indicated low voter turnout and limited voting in several polling units.
