ECOWAS Pledges Deeper Cooperation With Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger

New ECOWAS Commission President Birame Diop says the regional bloc will deepen engagement with Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger despite their withdrawal and formation of the Alliance of Sahel States. Speaking at his inauguration in Abuja, Diop said ECOWAS and the three Sahel countries remain bound by geography, shared borders and common security and economic challenges. He called for coordinated action against terrorism, irregular migration, cross-border crime and environmental threats. President Bola Tinubu, represented by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, urged the new leadership to strengthen regional integration, peace, security and financial accountability. ECOWAS also highlighted ongoing projects in energy, transport, food security and plans toward launching the ECO currency in 2027.
