UK Raises Settlement Wait to 10 Years Under New Earned Residency Rules
Most migrants seeking permanent settlement in the United Kingdom may now have to wait 10 years under the government’s new Earned Settlement policy. The waiting period will depend on income, National Insurance contributions, English proficiency and compliance with immigration laws. High earners may qualify after three years, while some doctors, nurses, teachers and eligible care workers can apply after five years. Care workers on at least £25,000 a year who meet their visa conditions are among those eligible for the faster route. Migrants who breach immigration rules could face waits of at least 20 years. Those who enter through unauthorised routes, including small boats, could wait up to 30 years before qualifying for settlement. The reforms are expected to affect more than 500,000 people. Existing permanent residents, family members of British citizens, Hong Kong British Nationals (Overseas) and armed forces personnel will keep their current settlement routes.
