Iranian Protester Reportedly Executed Hours After Prison Phone Wedding
An Iranian protester, Alireza Sepahi, was reportedly executed hours after marrying Mahshad Keshani in an informal prison ceremony conducted by telephone. The couple, both detained during anti-government protests, reportedly never met after their wedding. A Tehran-based rights lawyer said he helped conduct the ceremony, with the couple’s fathers joining by phone from Isfahan prison. Keshani’s family reportedly offered a Quran, saffron rock candy and a red rose as part of the marriage rite. Sepahi had reportedly survived an earlier execution attempt after suffering a heart attack. Human rights groups alleged that defendants connected to the Alikhani Square protest case were forced into confessions under torture. Iranian authorities reportedly prevented Sepahi’s family from burying him in his hometown after his death.
