Salman Rushdie to Receive National Book Foundation Lifetime Achievement Medal

Salman Rushdie will receive the National Book Foundation’s Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters at the National Book Awards ceremony in New York on November 18. The honour recognises Rushdie’s more than five decades of work on migration, identity, history, politics and multiculturalism. The Indian-born British-American writer is known for books including “Midnight’s Children”, “Shame”, “The Satanic Verses” and “Quichotte”. Rushdie survived a 2022 stabbing in New York that left him blind in one eye. He later wrote about the attack and his recovery in his memoir, “Knife”. The award places him among past recipients such as Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, Stephen King and Isabel Allende.
