Lawyers Question Edo Assembly’s Move to Convert Ex-Speaker Agbebaku’s Resignation to Impeachment
Legal practitioners have criticised the Edo State House of Assembly’s decision to reclassify former Speaker Blessing Agbebaku’s resignation as an impeachment. Former Chief Whip Paschal Ugbomeh argued that Agbebaku could not be removed from an office he had already voluntarily vacated. He said lawmakers should act within the law and clarify the basis for the action. Lawyer Afebu Aigbonoga said the Constitution distinguishes voluntary resignation from removal by a two-thirds resolution of the House. He added that changing an effective resignation into an impeachment, especially after a successor has taken office, raises serious constitutional questions.
