Troops Neutralise ISWAP Commander, Capture Fighter in Failed Kukareta Assault
Forces of Operation HADIN KAI repelled a coordinated ISWAP attack on Kukareta community in Borno State before dawn on April 23, 2026. Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar confirmed that the insurgents’ commander, Abu Umar Bundi Munzir, was shot dead alongside 24 other fighters. One militant was captured alive, and troops recovered 18 AK-47 rifles, machine guns, anti-aircraft guns, RPG tubes and other arms and ammunition. Two soldiers were wounded and stabilised after the clash, which lasted until around 3:00 a.m. Battlefield exploitation is ongoing to recover more equipment and militant casualties. The operation marks a significant success in sustained counter-insurgency efforts in the North-East theatre.
