Lagos Signs Deal With NURTW, RTEAN to Digitalise and Reform Bus Operations

The Lagos State Government has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria to begin the Bus Industry Transition Programme. The programme, managed by LAMATA, aims to bring informal commercial buses, including yellow danfos, into a more regulated public transport system. Transport unions will operate through cooperative societies as franchise operators, while fare collection is expected to become fully digital. Implementation will begin on four Quality Bus Corridors: Iju-Ishaga–Abule Egba, Ketu–Alapere–Akanimodo, Iyana-Iba–Igando–Iyana-Ipaja, and Ojuelegba–Lawanson–Cele. The state says the plan is intended to improve passenger safety, service delivery, route regulation and investment in public transport.
