South Africa Marks 500 Days Without Load Shedding as Eskom Performance Improves
South Africa has recorded more than 500 consecutive days without planned electricity blackouts, according to Eskom. The utility attributed the milestone to improved plant performance, lower unplanned outages and additional generation capacity. Eskom said its energy availability factor has risen to about 68%, while thousands of megawatts of generation capacity have been restored to the grid. Diesel spending and reliance on emergency gas turbines have also fallen sharply compared with the same period last year. The utility is also working to end load reduction, which affects areas with widespread illegal electricity connections. It says seven of South Africa’s nine provinces are now free from load reduction, with the number of affected customers declining substantially.
