Gov. Abiodun Says Governors Must Account for Fuel Subsidy Removal Gains
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun says state governors, rather than President Bola Tinubu, should explain how funds saved from the removal of petrol subsidy are being spent. Speaking at an APC rally in Ijebu-Ode, Abiodun said increased allocations to states have helped to fund roads, schools, housing and support for farmers. He criticised politicians promising to restore the subsidy, arguing that governors are the main beneficiaries of the additional revenue. The comments come amid renewed debate over subsidy savings. Opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, have accused the federal government of failing to account for the funds and have proposed restoring the subsidy if elected. The Tinubu administration has rejected that proposal, while officials say subsidy removal mobilised trillions of naira for the federation between June 2023 and December 2025.
