Jonathan Proposes Special Constitutional Court to Fast-Track Election Appeals
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged the National Assembly to overhaul Nigeria’s electoral litigation framework. He recommended creating a specialised Constitutional Court to handle all election disputes in one step rather than the existing three-tier process. Jonathan criticised the current sequence—from election tribunals to the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court—as slow and ineffective. He recalled a 2011 governorship case where votes were voided over the colour of ink, highlighting the need for a streamlined system. He suggested adopting the model used in some Francophone African countries, where a single constitutional court decides all political and electoral matters. He believes this would reduce delays and ease pressure on the judiciary. Speaking at former Governor Gbenga Daniel’s 70th birthday and book launch, Jonathan praised Daniel’s engineering mindset in politics. The event was attended by dignitaries including a representative of President Tinubu, former President Obasanjo, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders.
