Kano Tension Rises After Bayero Procession, Posters of Tinubu and Yusuf Destroyed
Tension has risen in Kano after Aminu Ado Bayero led a public procession through parts of the metropolis despite the state government’s suspension of Durbar processions and horse-riding activities. The restriction was introduced after a security council meeting over concerns about possible clashes and threats to public safety amid the continuing Kano Emirate dispute. Reports say some people who joined the procession damaged campaign posters and billboards belonging to President Bola Tinubu, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and other political figures. Bayero has apologised over the reported destruction of property and distanced the procession from the vandalism. The incident has renewed fears that the rivalry over the Kano Emirate, involving Bayero and Muhammadu Sanusi II, could fuel wider political tension if supporters and authorities do not exercise restraint.
