Russell Brand Denies Sexual Offence Charges as London Trial Opens
British comedian and actor Russell Brand has gone on trial at Southwark Crown Court in London over allegations involving six women between 1999 and 2009. Prosecutors told the jury that the women were allegedly targeted in locations including hotel rooms, workplaces, a bar restroom and Brand’s home. They said the complainants did not report the alleged incidents at the time because of shame, guilt and fear of being blamed. Brand has pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. He maintains that all sexual activity was consensual. The trial is expected to last several weeks.
