How NURTW and Political Rivalries Preceded the Killing of Osun Figure Emir

Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir, was killed by gunmen at a motor park area in Ile-Ife, Osun State. Witness accounts cited in the report say the attack followed tensions linked to rival factions within the National Union of Road Transport Workers and the state’s political landscape. Emir had built influence in Osun through street politics, transport union connections and party activities. He was also previously accused in criminal cases, including allegations of murder, arson and terrorism, which he had not been convicted of in the account provided. Governor Ademola Adeleke has called for those responsible to be arrested and for NURTW activities in the state to be proscribed. Some individuals named in connection with the wider dispute have denied involvement in the killing.
