Oyo High Court Hangs Man for Raping and Murdering 17-Year-Old in Ibadan
Justice Mojisola I. Sule of the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has sentenced Kolade Tosin to death by hanging. He was found guilty of raping and killing 17-year-old Ifeoluwa Apanpa in the Old area of Ibadan on September 17, 2022. The prosecution, led by the Oyo State Attorney General, called four witnesses, including the victim’s father, her pastor, and police officers. They presented Tosin’s recorded confession, witness testimonies, and forensic exhibits to prove the case. Tosin denied making any police statement, but the court ruled this claim an afterthought. Justice Sule held that the evidence met the threshold of “beyond reasonable doubt.” She imposed the mandatory death sentence for murder under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code and life imprisonment for rape under Section 358. After the verdict, Tosin was escorted to Agodi Custodial Centre to serve his sentences. The case began when the victim’s body was discovered by the roadside, her blood-stained clothes and phone leading detectives to the suspect.
