How to Confirm Your PAYE and Personal Income Tax Were Properly Remitted

A tax deduction on your payslip or a payment receipt does not always mean the money has been properly credited to your tax record. It is important to confirm that PAYE, withholding tax or direct personal income tax payments were remitted to the relevant authority. Start by keeping your payslips, tax assessment, payment receipts, Tax ID and any withholding-tax documents. Employees can ask their employer for PAYE remittance details and compare them with deductions shown on their payslips. Employers are expected to remit PAYE deductions by the 10th day of the following month and include employees’ tax details in their annual returns. If you paid tax directly, retain evidence showing the amount paid, the tax period and the payment reference. Contact the tax authority in your state of residence, or the FCT where applicable, to confirm that the payment has been credited. Keep tax records for at least six years. Where a payment cannot be found, do not pay again immediately. Reconcile the amount, date, tax period, Tax ID and payment reference first. Request clarification from the employer or other party that made the deduction, then submit your supporting documents to the relevant tax authority if necessary.
