Nigerian Man Jailed Eight Years in US Over $10m Hacking and Fraud Scheme
A United States court has sentenced Nigerian national Chukwuemeka Victor Amachukwu, 40, to eight years in prison for hacking, identity theft and fraud offences. Prosecutors said Amachukwu and other Nigeria-based conspirators used spearphishing emails to breach US tax preparation businesses from 2019. They allegedly stole personal information belonging to thousands of people and used it to pursue about $8.4 million in fraudulent tax refunds, receiving at least $2.5 million. The group also obtained at least $819,000 through fraudulent small-business disaster-loan claims. In a separate scheme, Amachukwu reportedly impersonated an overseas financier and collected more than $7 million from victims through fake investment offers. He was extradited from France to the US in 2025 and pleaded guilty to computer-intrusion and wire-fraud conspiracies. The court also ordered him to pay about $3.65 million in restitution and forfeit about $10.85 million.
