NLC Urges Action to End Xenophobic Violence Against African Migrants in South Africa
The Nigeria Labour Congress has called on the Congress of South African Trade Unions to lead a mass educational campaign against xenophobic attacks on migrant workers. In a letter dated May 7, 2026, the NLC President condemned recent killings and the destruction of businesses owned by African migrants. He warned that South Africa cannot defend the working class while allowing fellow black Africans to be hunted and killed. The NLC demanded full deployment of state resources to protect migrant workers, swift prosecution of perpetrators, and compensation for victims’ families. It also proposed an emergency meeting of African trade union centres to develop joint mechanisms for safeguarding migrant workers across the continent.
