Why Africa Remains Poor Despite Its Vast Natural Wealth

Africa is not poor because Africans lack ability or resources. The continent has oil, gold, diamonds, fertile land and a young population with enormous potential. Yet millions still lack reliable food, electricity, healthcare, education and security. Colonialism caused deep damage, but decades after independence, African leaders and institutions must also be held accountable for problems they create or allow to continue. Too often, people in power benefit from poverty, dependence and weak public systems. Ordinary citizens also have a role to play. Tribal, religious and party loyalties should not make us defend poor leadership. Africa can make progress only when competence, accountability and development matter more than sentiment.
