Amnesty Calls for Release of Kaduna Journalist Jailed Over Facebook Post
Amnesty International has demanded the release of Farida Isiak, a 23-year-old Nagarta Radio journalist sentenced to four years in prison or a ₦1.75 million fine over a Facebook post criticising police officers in Kaduna State. The rights group said the case began after a dispute over ₦100 change during a charcoal sale involving Isiak’s mother and a neighbour. It alleged that police arrested her mother and detained her father to compel Isiak to report to the station. Although she deleted the post and apologised, Isiak was arraigned before a Sharia Court in Kawo and convicted of defamation. Amnesty described the case as an abuse of power and called for the charges and fine to be withdrawn, as well as an independent investigation into the officers involved.
