Catholic Secretariat Urges Nigerians to Choose Competence Over Ethnicity in 2027

The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria has urged Nigerians to choose competent and credible leaders over candidates favoured because of religion or ethnicity in the 2027 general elections. At the close of the Justice Development and Peace Commission’s 2026 annual meeting in Abuja, the secretariat’s secretary-general, Michael Banjo, warned that voter apathy allows poor governance to continue. He urged citizens to reject vote-buying, hate speech and misinformation, and to participate peacefully in the electoral process. The group proposed a five-pillar civic-engagement framework, including voter registration, compliance with the Electoral Act, transparent result management by INEC and faster resolution of election petitions. Caritas Nigeria also said it plans to deploy technology and observers to more than 170,000 polling units. The commission called on INEC, the judiciary and security agencies to remain professional, transparent and neutral before and during the elections.
