64 Killed, Dozens Injured as High-Speed Trains Collide in Spain
At least 64 people have been confirmed dead and more than 80 injured after two high-speed trains collided near Urda, south of Madrid, Spain. More than 500 passengers were reportedly aboard the Renfe and Iryo services on the Madrid-to-Seville route. Rescue teams, ambulances and helicopters were deployed as survivors were taken to hospitals in nearby cities and Madrid. Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the collision. Preliminary reports suggest one train may have struck another service that had stopped after a problem on the track. Spanish authorities have begun an investigation as rescue and recovery operations continue. Several Copa del Rey matches and political campaign activities were postponed in solidarity with the victims.
