Alhassan Dantata: The Kano Merchant Behind a Lasting Nigerian Business Legacy
Alhassan Dantata was a prominent Kano merchant whose trading empire made him one of the wealthiest indigenous businessmen in colonial-era West Africa. Born in Bebeji in 1877, he built his wealth through groundnuts, kola nuts, grain, livestock, textiles and other commodities. He developed a wide network of farmers and traders across Northern Nigeria, supplying produce to major colonial trading firms. His role in Kano’s groundnut trade helped establish the city as an important commercial centre during the export boom. Dantata also supported commerce in Kano and served on the Emir’s council. After his death in 1955, later generations of the family remained active in industries including manufacturing, construction and energy. His great-grandson, Aliko Dangote, went on to build one of Africa’s largest industrial groups.
