The Hunter, the Tiger and the Clever Tortoise: A Yoruba Folktale
1 / 3
This Yoruba folktale, inspired by the tale “Itan Baba Ode,” follows a hunter who longs for a child. When he is finally blessed with one, he proudly vows to kill a tiger for the child’s christening. His boast reaches the king, while the clever tortoise begins one of its familiar tricks: calling both the thief and the owner at the same time. The hunter also makes mistakes, but his decision to heed his mother’s advice may be what saves him.
