Labour Attorney Shot Dead Outside CCMA Offices in Johannesburg
A 35-year-old labour lawyer, Chinette Gallichan, was gunned down in broad daylight outside the CCMA offices at the corner of Fox and Joubert streets in Johannesburg’s CBD. The shooting occurred around 9:00am on Monday, March 23, 2026, as she arrived for a hearing. Witnesses say the attacker approached at close range, opened fire, then fled on foot before escaping in a waiting vehicle. No personal items were taken, suggesting the attack was targeted. Colleagues have expressed shock and sadness at her sudden death. Gallichan held an LLB from Unisa and a postgraduate diploma in labour law with distinction from the University of Johannesburg. She was practising in the labour litigation department at Sibanye-Stillwater and had been handling a dispute over alleged unfair retrenchments. The South African Police Service has opened a murder case. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
