Jigawa Court Jails Man 10 Years for Raping 11-Year-Old Girl

A Jigawa State High Court in Ringim has sentenced 50-year-old Abubakar Biniya to 10 years in prison for raping an 11-year-old girl in January 2024. The court also ordered him to pay ₦500,000 compensation to the survivor. Prosecutors presented six witnesses and five exhibits, including a medical report, while Biniya testified in his defence without calling additional witnesses. Justice Muhammad El-Usman ordered that Biniya’s name be added to the Jigawa State Sexual Offenders Register. The court also directed that the conviction be announced on radio and television, as provided under the state’s violence against persons law. Both parties have three months to appeal.
