How a Lagos Robbery Suspect Escaped SARS Custody and Was Rearrested Five Years Later
Adeniyi Ajayi, also known as Ogologo, was among more than 100 suspects who escaped from the former SARS facility in Ikeja after the unit was disbanded in 2020. He had reportedly been remanded in police custody because COVID-19 restrictions affected the admission of new inmates into correctional facilities. Police sources alleged that two SARS operatives helped some detainees to escape in an attempt to increase crime and portray the disbandment of SARS as a mistake. The claim was linked to the wider fallout from the #EndSARS protests and longstanding concerns about police abuse. Lagos police said Ajayi was rearrested in October 2025 after detectives intercepted a suspected robbery gang near Jibowu. Officers later raided a hotel in Mushin said to be the group's hideout, where Ajayi was reportedly arrested and a locally made pistol recovered.
