Asylum Seeker Jailed for Carrying Petrol and Weapons Outside UK School

A South Sudanese asylum seeker, Douk Deng, has been jailed for two years after he was arrested outside Edgar Wood Academy in Middleton, Greater Manchester, with petrol and several weapons. Police said Deng had a petrol can containing about half a litre of fuel, a hammer, a hatchet and a kitchen knife. Prosecutors said he intended to set fire to the school, which was closed for the summer holiday at the time. The court heard that Deng had visited another nearby school the previous day, where he damaged an intercom after being challenged. He pleaded guilty to weapon possession, criminal damage and possessing an article with intent to destroy property. His lawyer said he was distressed over his failed asylum applications and wanted attention rather than to harm anyone. The judge said his circumstances were difficult but ruled that the offences were serious.
