AU Rights Body Says South Africa Is Not Inherently Xenophobic, Condemns Attacks on Foreigners
The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights says South Africa should not be labelled inherently xenophobic or Afro-phobic. However, it condemned renewed attacks, intimidation and discrimination targeting foreign nationals, including Nigerians and other Africans. After a five-day fact-finding mission, the commission raised concerns about slow investigations, weak prosecution of violent actors and alleged financiers of vigilante groups. It said some groups have blocked suspected non-nationals from essential services such as health care and education. The commission urged South Africa to make human rights, dignity and non-discrimination a stand-alone part of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s five-point migration plan. It also warned against blaming foreign nationals for unemployment, poor public services and pressures on small businesses.
