Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s Husband Dies in Zanzibar
Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died while receiving treatment at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar. Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi said Ameir died on Monday morning after battling a heart condition. Funeral arrangements are being made in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar. Ameir was an agricultural academic who largely stayed out of public life during his wife’s political career. He became Tanzania’s First Gentleman in 2021, when President Hassan took office following the death of John Magufuli. The couple married in 1978 and had four children. Regional leaders, including Kenyan President William Ruto and Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, have sent condolences to the family.
