Defence Minister Says ₦5.41tn Budget Buys Only “A Few Things” as Weapons Costs Soar
The Minister of Defence says Nigeria’s proposed ₦5.41 trillion defence allocation for 2026 is limited when converted to dollars and measured against the cost of modern weapons. He cited a Tomahawk missile at about $3.2 million and a basic drone-guided precision bomb at roughly $100,000, or about ₦140 million. He said every weapon used carries a significant cost, whether or not it hits its intended target. The remarks came during an interview on a national television programme about security funding and military procurement.
