NYSC Witness Cites Four Defects in Nnaji’s Disputed Service Certificate
An NYSC certification department official told the Federal High Court in Abuja that four features of a disputed discharge certificate indicated it was not issued by the agency. The document was allegedly presented by former minister Geoffrey Nnaji during his ministerial screening. The witness said it carried an “A” prefix not used until 1990, a four-digit call-up number instead of the five digits used in 1985, 13 months of service rather than the standard 12, and no signature from the director-general then in office. The testimony came in a case brought by the ICPC, in which Nnaji faces six counts involving allegations of corruption, fraud and false information. The charges concern the alleged making and presentation of a false NYSC certificate and university degree certificate. The witness maintained that the certificate before the court was not issued by the NYSC, but acknowledged he had not checked whether the agency had ever issued Nnaji a certificate. The court admitted correspondence between the ICPC and the NYSC as exhibits. The defence reserved its objection to their admissibility and said it had not received copies. The judge adjourned the case until November 30 for the witness’s cross-examination to continue.
