Growing up, I understood that some police officers collected illegal payments discreetly because it was shameful. Today, I often see officers, including those off duty, openly demanding money at garages and on the road. This reflects a troubling loss of accountability, not only within the police but across public institutions. Corruption thrives where officials are unchecked and wrongdoing carries no visible consequences. As elections approach, citizens must demand responsibility from leaders and examine our own conduct too. A better society will require integrity from public officers and from all of us.
