Open Letter to President Tinubu: Decentralise Power and End Estimated Billing

I am writing to urge an honest reset of Nigeria’s electricity sector. The 2013 privatisation has failed to deliver reliable power, while millions of customers remain unmetered and continue to receive estimated bills despite frequent outages. Nigeria has spent trillions addressing power-sector debts, yet households and businesses still depend heavily on generators. I argue that electricity should no longer depend mainly on a single national grid. Communities, estates and states should be enabled to build metered solar and local power networks, supported by regulated tariffs and government-backed financing. This would give residents and local investors greater control over supply and payment. The Electricity Act already gives states a larger role in electricity regulation. Aba’s independent power model shows that decentralised generation and distribution can work. I call on the Federal Government to coordinate the transition while states and communities take responsibility for local power infrastructure.
