Ohanaeze Urges Tinubu to Release Nnamdi Kanu Before 2027
Ohanaeze Ndigbo has called on President Tinubu to free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, saying the entire Igbo nation feels imprisoned until their leader is released. The demand was made during the Ohanaeze Imeobi and General Assembly in Enugu, where President General Chief Senator John Azuta-Mbata warned against promises of Igbo votes without first addressing Kanu’s incarceration. The group also welcomed discussions on additional state creation and condemned negative stereotypes of Igbo people. They urged Ndigbo to respect host communities, uphold core values abroad, and promote Igbo language and culture as vital parts of their identity. To preserve their heritage, Ohanaeze has established academic chairs in Igbo studies at four universities and plans to offer scholarships and online language courses for the diaspora. The organisation also challenged Igbo politicians to be visionary, accountable, and responsive to the people they serve.
