Two Farmers Shot Dead in Suspected Communal Attack in Cross River
Two farmers were killed early Monday on Ekpenti Farm Road near Idomi-Ugep Road in Yakurr LGA, Cross River State. The victims, 56-year-old Omini Iyam Ebri and 58-year-old Ubi Ofem Ubi, were attacked around 7:05 a.m. According to police, Ebri was shot in the face and Ubi sustained a leg injury but died while receiving treatment at Ugep General Hospital. State Police spokesperson ASP Sunday Eitokpah said operatives and the Village Community Relations Unit have been deployed to prevent further violence. He added that efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest the assailants and urged residents to remain calm. Security measures have been heightened to maintain order in the affected communities. This incident follows a series of clashes in the Cross River Central Senatorial District. It has renewed fears of tensions between the Ugep and Idomi communities. The Yakurr Local Council recently convened a peace meeting with community leaders and security agencies, adopting resolutions to curb misinformation and promote lasting peace.
