South-East Commuters Face Higher Fares as Petrol Sells Above ₦1,400
Commuters and motorists across the South-East say they have not felt the promised reduction in transport costs, as petrol continues to sell for about ₦1,400 to ₦1,500 per litre in several locations. In Anambra, residents in Onitsha, Awka, Nnewi and Ekwulobia reported sharp increases in transport fares. Some routes that previously cost ₦200 now cost up to ₦400, while trips from Onitsha to Awka have risen to about ₦2,000. Drivers say fluctuating pump prices have reduced their earnings and forced them to raise fares. In Abia and Imo, motorists and commuters also reported paying high prices despite the Federal Government's announced fuel discount initiative. Traders, workers and students say the higher transport costs are increasing the price of goods and making daily travel more difficult. They have called for a reduction in fuel prices and better implementation of the initiative.
