US to Sustain Counterterrorism Alliance with Nigeria After Top ISIS Leader’s Death
United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the US will continue active counterterrorism cooperation with Nigeria’s security forces. He highlighted a recent joint operation that eliminated the number-two leader of global ISIS operating from Nigeria. Rubio also expressed concern about violence against Christians in Nigeria and pledged ongoing US support to address these attacks. He noted US airstrikes in Sokoto last December and joint strikes with Nigerian forces in the northeast targeting ISWAP in May 2026. This deeper security collaboration followed President Trump’s public announcement of the operation that killed Abu Bilal al-Minuki. Nigeria’s military and National Security Adviser confirmed their role in supplying vital intelligence.
