Meta Agrees to $17 Billion Settlement Over Teen Social Media Addiction Claims

Meta Agrees to $17 Billion Settlement Over Teen Social Media Addiction Claims

Meta has agreed to pay $17 billion to settle claims from 47 US states that Facebook and Instagram were designed in ways that harmed young users’ mental health and encouraged addiction. The agreement ends a major trial in California that was expected to feature testimony from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The states also accused the company of collecting data from children under 13 without parental consent. Meta says it will introduce additional child-safety measures and work with regulators to improve protections for teenagers. The settlement is among the largest consumer-protection agreements involving a technology company.
