Senator Ikpea: Boko Haram Repentants Must Face Full Legal Penalties
Senator Joseph Ikpea, chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics and representative for Edo Central, has rejected plans to rehabilitate and reintegrate repentant Boko Haram members. He told journalists at the committee’s inaugural meeting that those responsible for killing civilians and soldiers should face the full weight of the law rather than return to civilian life. Ikpea argued that reintegration policies dishonour the sacrifices of security forces and victims of terrorism. He also suggested some recent kidnappings may have political motives aimed at undermining government credibility ahead of elections. On drug policy, the senator said his committee will carefully review a bill proposing the death penalty for drug offences. He pledged to strengthen oversight of the NDLEA and inspect rehabilitation centres nationwide to ensure they meet regulatory standards. Highlighting rising drug abuse among Nigerian youths, Ikpea proposed introducing drug education into school curricula from the primary level. He warned that early prevention is crucial to safeguard the nation’s future leaders.
