CBN’s Asia Engagement Must Deliver Real Opportunities for Nigerians
Economic stability must create room for investment, enterprise and sustainable growth. During engagements in Singapore, Bangkok, Beijing and Guangzhou, I focused on building stronger financial links between Nigeria and Asian institutions. Nigeria presented signs of progress, including lower inflation, stronger external reserves and bank recapitalisation. But I remain mindful of the pressures facing Nigerians. The goal is to turn improved indicators into practical opportunities for businesses, investors and households. Meetings with financial regulators, exchanges, banks and investors explored cross-border payments, trade finance, capital-market development, remittances and financial innovation. Discussions with Nigerian businesses trading with China also highlighted the difficulties they face in moving money and conducting cross-border commerce. The real test is what follows: more efficient transactions, stronger investor confidence and better connections between Nigerians abroad, local businesses and international markets. The Central Bank will continue to prioritise disinflation, financial stability and policies that support lasting prosperity.
