Hadiza Oboh: Remembering Nigeria Airways’ First Female Pilot and the Unsolved 1998 Murder Case
Senior First Officer Hadiza Lantana Oboh made history as Nigeria Airways’ first female pilot. At a time when aviation was largely dominated by men, she became a symbol of possibility for Nigerian women pursuing careers in the industry. Oboh was killed at her Ikoyi, Lagos home in February 1998, aged 39. Police investigations later found her remains in a septic tank on the property and linked several domestic workers to the alleged robbery and killing. The suspects were arraigned on conspiracy, armed robbery and murder charges. However, some reportedly disappeared after being granted bail, leaving the case unresolved decades later. Her life and death remain an important part of Nigeria’s aviation and crime history.
